Militaries have used mortars for centuries, but they were usually large and difficult to move. Baron Menno van Coehoorn first devised a smaller mortar that was easily movable. This so-called Coehorn mortar was first used at the siege of Grave in 1674.
The Coehorn mortar was used during the Revolutionary War. It was designed to be carried by a crew of men. They could change positions quickly.
The barrel of a Coehorn mortar has a fixed position. You control where the payload lands by your distance from the target, and from the amount of powder you load.
