Early Americans created broadsides, books, magazines, and advertisements. They used printing presses to mass produce these documents. Any art or pictures had to be made by hand. They often used wood blocks to produce the image. It was duplicated on the printing press.

The wood block was made in reverse. The image that it produced would be backwards. It took a large effort to make each block.

Which picture did you make? Why did you select that picture?

If you were going to make a new wood block, what would it be? How difficult do you think it would be to create? What tools would you need?

Did you see anyone carve a new block? What did you think?
