There was a practice among many native American tribes of forcible adoption.

There were many reasons why this occurred. Some tribes would sieze members of other tribes. Some tribes might capture Europeans.

In some cases, the prisoners were treated well like members of the family. In other cases, they were mistreated like slaves.

Some Europeans survived and returned to their families after escaping. Some of these people wrote down what happened to them. This story is only one of them.

Listen to the story carefully, and see if you can determine why they captured him. How do you think that he felt when he was separated by his family? What do you think he believed was going to happen to him? what type of difficulties did he have in communicating with his captors? What would you feel like if this happened to you?

How do you like your warpaint? How does it make you feel to walk around looking like an Indian?
