A tomahawk was an edged weapon used in battle also used as a tool. Forged metal tomahawks were used by Europeans since the middle ages. Native Americans had similar weapons made from stone prior to the arrival of Europeans

Tomahawks were typically used as a martial art in battle. The tomahawk can be used both as an offensive and a defensive weapon. The martial art of fighting with tomahawks was taught by the military.

People did not typically throw their tomahawk in battle. Then you would no longer have your weapon, and your enemy might possess it instead. The tomahawk was used in hand-to-hand combat.

However, a tomahawk might be thrown while hunting. Many throw tomahawks as a competitive sport.
