The Declaration of Independence establishes the United States of America as a sovereign nation. It establshes some basic principles of human rights. It declares that government exists to protect individual rights. It claims that citizens have the right to determine who governs them. It creates a divine moral standard for the relationship of government and the governed.

For these reasons and others, it is an important document to the history of the United States.
